O Observando os Rios é um projeto que reúne comunidades e as mobiliza em torno da qualidade da água de rios, córregos e outros corpos d’água das localidades onde elas vivem.
A iniciativa é aberta à população, que pode participar dos grupos de monitoramento já existentes ou ajudar a criar novos grupos em rios próximos a escolas, igrejas e outros centros comunitários. O monitoramento das águas é realizado com um kit desenvolvido pela SOS Mata Atlântica. Os grupos fazem a medição uma vez por mês e enviam os resultados pela internet.
Esse kit possibilita a avaliação dos rios a partir de um total de 16 parâmetros, que incluem níveis de oxigênio, fósforo, PH, odor, aspectos visuais, entre outros, e classifica a qualidade das águas em cinco níveis de pontuação, de acordo com a legislação: péssimo (de 14 a 20 pontos), ruim (de 21 a 26 pontos), regular (de 27 a 35 pontos), bom (de 36 a 40 pontos) e ótimo (acima de 40 pontos).
A análise dos resultados compõe o relatório o “Retrato da Qualidade da Água no Brasil”, amplamente divulgado anualmente, em geral no Dia Mundial da Água.
Malu Ribeiro, especialista de recursos hídricos da Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica reforça a importância da criação desses grupos. “A formação de uma rede de cidadãos para monitorar a qualidade da água dos rios brasileiros é um instrumento de engajamento e mobilização por avanços no saneamento”, comenta Malu.
O programa surgiu em 1991, com uma campanha que reuniu 1,2 milhão de assinaturas em prol da recuperação do Rio Tietê e originou o primeiro projeto de monitoramento da qualidade da água por voluntários, o “Observando o Tietê”. Para agregar outras bacias hidrográficas, a iniciativa foi ampliada e passou a se chamar “Observando os Rios”. Em nova fase, com o patrocínio da Ypê, o projeto agora tem como objetivo formar 10 grupos de monitoramento da qualidade da água em cada um dos 17 estados da Mata Atlântica.
Atualmente, são 252 grupos de monitoramento que analisam a qualidade da água em 307 pontos, 247 corpos d´água, em 104 municípios dos estados de RS, SC, PR, SP, GO, MS, RJ, MG, ES, BA, AL, SE, PB, PE, RN, CE, PI e DF, envolvendo cerca de 3,6 mil pessoas.
